Posting Files For Download

I receive quite a few requests asking about the proper procedure for posting files for downloading. Most often, the inquiries are from people who just want the basics of how to post links to the files from their web page. That's what we'll cover here.

File Types
The most popular file types offered for download are:
Executable (exe),
Image (bmp, gif, jpeg, jpg, png, tif),
Sound (au, mid, mp3, mpeg, ra, rm, wav),
Video (avi, ivs, mov, qt, rm, scm, viv, vivo,)
Zip (zip).

Executable
Most free web space provides do not support exe files and therefore you cannot upload them. If your provider does support exe files then posting them for download is simple. Just link directly to the file as demonstrated below.

Image
Anyone that spends much time surfing the web already knows how to right click and save an image. The ones that you are most likely going to offer for download are non supported (ones that are not read by most browsers) and image bundles (groups of images as for an album). The easiest way to post either of these is to simply ZIP the files, with a program like WinZip, and then link directly to the zip file as demonstrated below.

Sound
If you link directly to a sound file, most often, the browser will open a plugin or associated program and try to play the file. The two ways to get around this are to:

1. Explain to your visitors that they must Right Click on the link and select Save Target As...

2. Zip the file and then link directly to the zip file as explained earlier.

Video
The same rules apply to video files that apply to sound files.

Zip
The best format for any file offered for download. The zip format is recognized by virtually all browsers and downloaders. This is also a compressed file format that will make your files smaller and therefore faster to download.
